On November 12, 2009, Responsibility House hosted its fourth workshop on Integrated Treatment. The topic of this workshop was:
Trauma and Substance Abuse
Integrated Treatment Workshop
At Celebration
Church, 2701 Transcontinental Drive, Metairie, LA
Twice a year we host a
full day clinical training for practicing professionals and graduate
students through our Integrated Treatment Training and
Education Program.
This fall we hosted:
Lisa Najavits, PhD
Professor of Psychiatry, Boston University
School of Medicine
Lecturer, Harvard Medical School
Clinical Psychologist, McLean Hospital
Author of Seeking Safety: A Treatment Manual for
PTSD and Substance Abuse
In the workshop,
Dr. Najavits provided participants with clinical tools for utilizing
the 'Seeking Safety' approach. Seeking Safety is a present-focused
therapy to help people attain safety from trauma and substance abuse.
The treatment, an evidence-based practice, was designed for flexible use
and can be successfully implemented in a variety of clinical
settings.
The connection
between trauma-related disorders and substance abuse is an important
topic to our community, where rates of PTSD are well above the national
average. We
also provided 6 hours of Continuing Education Units through the Louisiana
Counseling Association (for Counselors), National Association of Social
Workers - Louisiana (for Social Workers), and the Louisiana Addictive
Disorders Regulatory Authority (for Addiction Counselors).
